How Long Can Water Sit on a Flat Roof?
The 48-hour standard most roofing professionals use, and why it matters more than it sounds.
Most roofing industry standards consider water that hasn’t drained within 48 hours after rainfall stops to be a sign of a drainage problem, not normal roof behavior. Some references use 24 hours as the threshold for a well-designed system. Either way, if you can consistently find standing water on your roof two or more days after the last rain, that’s worth investigating.
The longer water sits, the more damage it can cause: it adds sustained weight to the roof structure, accelerates membrane aging through prolonged UV/moisture exposure at the ponded area, promotes algae and organic growth that can degrade the membrane surface, and increases the odds that a small membrane flaw becomes an active leak.

What to Do If You Notice Water Past the 48-Hour Mark

If the drain is clear and water is still pooling, that points to a slope or structural issue worth having assessed, ideally before the next significant rain event adds to it.
Tracking whether the same spot ponds after multiple separate rain events, or whether it’s isolated to one unusually heavy storm, also helps distinguish a recurring drainage problem from a one-time fluke.
