How Water Travels Beneath a Roof Membrane

The single biggest reason flat roof leaks get misdiagnosed: the visible drip and the actual entry point are often not in the same place.

On a sloped roof, gravity is your friend — water enters at a spot and generally travels straight down. A flat roof doesn’t work that way. Once water gets under the membrane, it follows the path of least resistance across the roof deck, not necessarily straight down.

This matters most on corrugated metal decks, which are common under older membrane systems. The corrugation creates channels that can carry water sideways for 15–20 feet or more before it finds a seam, a fastener hole, or a low point to drip through into the building below. So the ceiling stain in your kitchen might trace back to a failed seam on the far side of the roof, nowhere near where the water is showing up.

This is exactly why we start every inspection inside, at the stain, and work backward — measuring against fixed points to triangulate the roof-level location — rather than just walking the roof looking for the first obvious crack.

A Practical Example of Lateral Water Travel

Picture a corrugated metal deck running under an aging membrane, with a failed seam near one edge of the roof. Rain gets in at that seam and lands on the corrugated deck, which has ridges and valleys running in one direction. Water doesn’t pool right at the entry point — it runs along the nearest valley in the corrugation until it reaches a low spot, a fastener hole, or the edge of a structural member, then drips through there instead. If that drip point happens to be 15 feet from the original seam failure, the ceiling stain shows up 15 feet from the actual problem.

This is exactly why we don’t just look straight up from an interior stain and assume that’s the roof-level problem. Understanding the deck type and its likely drainage pattern is part of forming an accurate hypothesis about where to actually look.

It’s most pronounced on corrugated metal decks due to their channel-like structure, but even plywood decks with a slight slope or minor sag can direct water sideways to some degree before it penetrates through a seam or fastener hole.

How do you figure out which direction water traveled?

By understanding the deck’s structural pattern (which way any corrugation or slope runs) combined with tracing backward from the interior stain and checking likely transition points in that direction first.
