When the roof’s drainage hardware itself is the problem, not just debris blocking it.
Scuppers and drains are the roof’s actual drainage exits — and when either one is damaged, undersized, or improperly sealed to the membrane, water either pools around it or tracks in around the fitting instead of through it. This is different from a simple blockage, which just needs clearing.
Common failure points: a cracked scupper liner or corroded metal scupper sleeve, a drain clamping ring that’s lost its seal to the membrane, or a scupper positioned too high relative to the roof surface (causing water to pool below the scupper opening rather than draining freely).

When to Suspect the Hardware vs. Just a Blockage
If clearing visible debris from a scupper or drain doesn’t stop water from pooling or tracking incorrectly, that’s the signal to suspect the hardware itself rather than continuing to assume it’s just a clog. Visible cracking, rust, or gaps around the fitting are the clearest signs, but sometimes the issue is less visible — a failed seal behind a drain clamping ring, for example, that only shows up as water intrusion inside the building near that point.

Can a damaged scupper cause a leak even if the roof membrane itself is fine?
Yes — the scupper penetration through the parapet wall is its own separate potential leak point, independent of the membrane’s overall condition.
Is scupper repair more disruptive than drain repair?
Not necessarily — both are typically contained repairs at a single point, though scupper repair may involve some work on the parapet wall itself depending on how the fitting is integrated.
